Den Anhaltspunkt für die Rohstoffanalyse der Keramik stellt die Scherbenbeschaffenheit dar. Dabei sind vier Bestandteile von Bedeutung. Das sind: Überzug der Serben, Magerungskorn, Matrix (der Grundstoff) und beim Brennen erstandene Pore und Risse. Beim sachgerechten Umgang mit Daten über Rohstoff, stellt er in Rahmen der archäologischen Untersuchung eine unerschöpfliche Informationsquelle über die Kulturen dar. In manchen Fällen ist der Rohstoff einzige Quelle, die uns die wissenschaftsnachweisbaren Fakten über eine oder andere Aspekte der Kultur geben kann.
